Quick Thoughts – ROH: Glory By Honor IX

by on September 23, 2010

Might as well start off with wrestling… Watched the Ring of Honor Internet Pay-Per-View, Glory by Honor IX. On one hand, the PPV is $15.00 to watch it on my small laptop screen, on the other, it’s a far cry from the $50.00 for the WWE and I can watch it as many times as I want.

The show had three main contests.

  • A dream tag match between the Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli) versus the former WWE team Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.
  • A double-dog collar match between Steve Corino and Kevin Steen versus El Generico and Colt Cabana
  • A ROH World Title match between the departing Tyler Black and Roderick Strong

Quick Thoughts

  1. Jay Briscoe vs Kenny King – I had seen Kenny King previously, but he really impressed me in this contest. Definitely an up-and-comer in the ROH scene. King won the contest after Jay was distracted by King’s partner, Rhett Titus. ***
  2. Mark Briscoe vs Rhett Titus – Titus reminds me a lot of Stevie Richards in his ECW days. The match was just okay, but as good as any you’d see on Monday Night Raw. Briscoe wins with a Burning Hammer (love that move!). **1/2
  3. Erick Stevens & Necro Butcher vs Grizzly Redwood & Ballz Mahoney – Mahoney is a curious choice, but is still more active than most ECW wrestlers. A fine tag match, but really did nothing for me. *1/2
  4. Colt Cabana & El Generico vs Kevin Steen & Steve Corino – I love feuds, and even though this match could have been better, the heat from the feud is wonderful. Cabana makes Corino tap, but Steen takes off Generico’s mask. ****
  5. ROH TV Title Match: Eddie Edwards vs Shawn Daivari – A fine match, but really did nothing to establish Daivari as a real threat. If it keeps Edwards strong for an eventual Edwards vs Richards feud, then I see the point. **
  6. Austin Aries vs Christopher Daniels – I haven’t liked Aries in the ring for a while now. For some reason his new style doesn’t appeal to me. Daniels had some great moves including the Super Angels Wings, but it really felt like thrown together and a one spot match. **1/2
  7. Kings of Wrestling vs Hass & Benjamin – A very good tag team match. My only real problem was that the Kings were able to dominate both Hass and Benjamin in the Ricky Morton role, waiting for the hot tag, with not much dominance on the other side. Kings win in a typical tag team trickery. Still was loads of fun though. ***1/2
  8. ROH World Title Match: Tyler Black vs Roderick Strong – With Black leaving the ending wasn’t really in dispute. Strong is built as a refocused heel, and Black as a jerk heel leaving for greener pastures; Some nice moves, but the match was a little short; Strong wins with a gutbuster superkick combo;

Other Notes/Predictions

  • I’m thinking of him only as an ROH Wrestler, but I think El Generico should unmask. It’s the only way to make him a serious player in Ring of Honor. The feud has been great, but what will El Generico do after the feud is over.
  • While I’m glad to hear that Davey Richards is returning, I’m not sure I like him being automatically named the challenger for the ROH World Title at Final Battle 2010; It’s like declaring the event as Richards’s title victory, three months ahead of time.
  • The return of Homicide is nice. Hopefully they do something to redeem his original championship run in 2006/2007, which was mostly curtailed by TNA policies, but ROH did take the title off of him rather quickly.
  • I hope that the tag titles don’t go right back to the Briscoes; Maybe ROH can do something new with the Briscoes for 2010/2011, because tho they are good in the ring, the act is very stale.

That’s it… I’m out…
